The Sultan of Sokoto and President, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday said there was no report on the sighting of the new moon of Shawwal from across the country, and therefore declared Sunday, May, 24 as Eid-il-fitri (Sallah day).

This means that Muslims will observe Ramadan fast today to make this year’s fasting 30 days. A statement from the Wazirin Sokoto and chairman, Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs to the Sultanate Council, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu, said the monarch felicitated with the Muslim Ummah and wished them Allah’s guidance and blessings.

The Deputy Secretary General, NSCIA, Prof. Salisu Shehu, had in a previous statement urged Muslims to look out for the Shawwal moon yesterday and that Sunday would be declared the Eid day by the Sultan if the moon was not sighted.
